Fun way to see a city. I might actually understand a book like this. What just happened? Just added it to my Kindle list. I love Venice — I first went when I was 12 and fell in love. My aunt used to live right outside of town; I wish I could remember the name. She loved it there. Very cool.
Perfect winter reading to inspire travel adventures for next year. I am sure this will be right up my alley! Your email address will not be published.

Venetia - A Supernatural thriller set in Venice
However, the twist at the end completely surprised me! Sufficed to say, the story has stayed with me long after finishing it. Simon Barnes has written a hauntingly dark and thrilling supernatural thriller that has captured my attention. His descriptions of Venice made me feel like I was actually there. His writing style is fast paced and it flowed beautifully.
I would consider reading more of this author's work in the future. Due to the nature of this story, I do not recommend this book to younger readers.
However, I highly recommend it if you love suspense, mysteries, thrillers or horror. Jul 24, Ashley rated it liked it. When this book advertised itself as a supernatural thriller, I was expecting something more than what I received. The entire first half of the book was as if I was reading a travel brochure regarding Venice--the description, even the inclusion of so much Italian was too much for the story, and I think that it pulled from the storyline, if anything.

The way the author wrote was as if he expected the reader to know everything about the city in which the story takes place already, and I will be the first to admit I know nothing about Venice. For the first half of the book, the prologue was the part that had me hooked.
The way the book began, the way the grisly truth came out, instantly had me hooked. However, there was where the hook ended. The supernatural "thriller" element began to build itself, but for me, I was already not as interested in the book as I would have been had the action built like a normal novel would.
However, as the book came to a close, you could see the supernatural elements that had been hidden in the beginning weaving their way into the end, to assist in the climax. All in all, not what I expected to read May 08, Jennifer rated it it was ok Shelves: fiction , paranormal. The reviews on Amazon gave the impression that this book was some sort of literary masterpiece, an exciting read that raced along with surprises on every page.
The Venetian Masquerade
I think I must have read a completely different book. Or that the reviewers worked for the publisher. I did appreciate the descriptions of Venice - these managed to bring the city to life and as a tourist guide this book would work quite well.

The majority of the book was taken up with the minutiae of a family's life. All that endless detail about nothing in particular. I was waiting for the twists and turns, the tension, the supernatural chills.
So disappointing. Sep 13, Jennifer rated it really liked it. I was expecting a supernatural thriller from this book by reading the description, but really I think it is more than that.

I liked the archeological elements to this one, and the fact the the story twists back and forth between to present day Venice. The secrets of the past don't seem to want to lie dormant any longer and 7 year old Venetia shows her mother, who is an archeologist that there are some things from the past that she is not ready for.
